Creating global understanding through English

What is the ESU?

The English-Speaking Union of Denmark (ESU-DK) was established in 1991. Its purpose is to promote the use of English throughout the world, as a language of international understanding and to provide a forum for non-native speakers to practise and improve their English.

Today, ESU-DK members can enjoy a range of interesting events in English, including lectures, theatre visits and cultural outings.

Patron: H. E. Alexandra Christina , Countess of Frederiksborg

The ESU is a UK registered charity (No. 273136) with English as a common global language to nurture dialogue and the exchange of ideas and opinions. The ESU brings together and empowers people of many different languages and cultures. By building skills and confidence in communication, we give young people the opportunity to realise their potential.

These objectives are supported by ESU members and alumni worldwide.

Objectives

Our aim is to reach out to more young people and, by recruiting more members, expand our cultural and educational activities.

Identifying sponsors is another aim that would enable us to send two contestants every year to the International Speaking Competition and to be proactive with regard to other educational programmes.

A small association, and not particularly wealthy, we rely heavily on the goodwill of speakers who often perform for a token gift for which we are always very grateful.

Another objective is aim is to take a more active role in the ESU internationally and are proud that our former Chairman, Arne Zettersten, became International President of the ESU, for 2009-10. Members of the ESU-DK board participated in the 2008 World Members Conference in Edinburgh and in 2012 in Istanbul.
